Week Starting Monday 11th March 2024

The Le Tour de Merriwa 5ème Édition and the Giro de Cassilis 2nd Edition were successfully held last weekend (9 & 10th March)

The organisers would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters that have made this event such a success for the past 5 years.

There are too many people to thank individually but we would like to extend our gratitude particularly to
  • Merriwa Rescue Squad – VRA Rescue NSW, Merriwa River RFS and NSW RFS – Cassilis Brigade and James Constable for their work in keeping us safe on the road.
  • Merriwa CWA, Merriwa Mens Shed, and Cassilis Public School for keeping our riders fed and watered – (some riders return every year just for the CWA date loaf) & IGA Plus Liquor Merriwa for donating our supply of bananas.
  • David and Stephanie Murray and the team at Dales Angus for their iconic morning tea stop that has become a feature of the weekend
  • Barb and Ant Martin for the spectacular afternoon tea during the first edition of the Giro de Cassilis – Barbs ANZAC biscuits are second to none.
  • We would especially like to thank the individual community members that have donated their time to ensure that we can hold this event. There are too many to name but we know who you are and we appreciate you.
  • The impressive photography work by Newcastle Mike and Archie C Photography ensures that the events will be noted in history.
  • Our local media organisations 98.1 Power FM ABC Newcastle AM981 2NM The Hunter River Times have helped to promote our events far and wide.
  • All our participants and their supporters that have come from far and wide. We love your fun loving nature, positive attitude and the way you have reached out to support our community.
  • We would like to thank the road crew at Upper Hunter Shire Council who have tried to eliminate the most serious hazards from the course and improve safety for our riders.
  • We would especially like to thank the Merriwa, Cassilis and Sandy Hollow communities for their spirited support over the last 5 years. It has been great to see all the decorations.
Le Tour de Merriwa was the brainchild of Nicky Western the sports participation officer for the UHSC and the president of Scone Triathlon Club. Nicky works tirelessly to improve opportunities for sports participation across the shire and has gone above and beyond to ensure that our events have been a success.

Le Tour de Merriwa is one of the very few events that has managed to run right through Covid. There has been a great atmosphere at each ride and we hope that it has helped to strengthen our sense of community.

We are not quite sure what lies ahead for Le Tour de Merriwa and Giro de Cassilis.

For small town events there is a constant need to innovate in order to continue to attract the same riders and to get new participants. Sometimes a fresh approach is needed. We will have some committee members taking a step back so if there are community members that would like to become involved there will be an opportunity to put a fresh stamp on things.

Thankyou everyone for the last 5 years – it has been a blast!

TEAM SEATING SHELTERS

As we all know our local sporting areas in Merriwa are heavily used and in need of constant upgrade and improvements.
The Sports Ground User Group committee, which is aligned with Junior Rugby League is hard at work behind the scenes. The committee is made up of all users from our amazing sporting community and is motivated to improve our current sporting precinct. Our latest improvement is the generous donation of 2 x team seating shelters for our home and away teams to now enjoy. The donation is thanks to the Junior Rugby League’s Major Sponsor “MACH ENERGY” and is for all to use and benefit from.
# If you are also looking at helping out our wonderful sporting community please get in touch. 🙌.

DROUGHT RESILENCE PLAN CONSULTATION

On display until 22 March 2024, 05:00 PM

We are pleased to announce that the public consultation for the development of a comprehensive Drought Resilience Plan is now open. This initiative, a collaborative effort by Upper Hunter Shire, Singleton Council, and Muswellbrook Shire Council, is made possible through funding from the Australian Government and the NSW Government under the Future Drought Fund. The strategy aims to enhance our region’s resilience to future droughts by focusing on understanding historical impacts, exploring mitigation and adaptation strategies, and prioritising community-led actions.

Consultation Period

The consultation will be open until 5pm on Friday, 22 March 2024. This is a pivotal opportunity for community members to share their insights, experiences, and suggestions to help shape a resilience plan that truly reflects the needs and strengths of our region.

How to Participate

To have your say, please access the survey through the following link: Take the Survey

The survey is straightforward and should only take a few minutes to complete. We value your feedback and encourage you to contribute to this important discussion.

Why Your Feedback Matters

Your participation is critical in ensuring the Drought Resilience Plan addresses the real needs of our community. By sharing your perspectives, you help us identify key areas for action, innovative solutions for drought mitigation and adaptation, and strategies for effective community engagement. This consultation is a chance for you to influence how our community prepares for and responds to drought conditions.

The survey closes at 5pm on Friday 22nd March 2024.
