MERRIWA DISTRICT PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

WHEEL BUFFERS AND MORE …

Merriwa District Progress Association has been successful in seeking the installation of wheel buffers along Bettington Street. We’d like to thank the Council for responding to this need in such a timely fashion.

These wheel buffers are a safety feature aimed at stopping kerbside collisions with obstacles on the footpath (bins, signs, verandah posts, electrical poles). No doubt we are all aware of the expensive damage this incidents can cause to vehicles. It also goes without saying that the cost to repair the infrastructure is borne initially by Council but ultimately by ratepayers. The wheel buffers will also eliminate the likelihood of low-slung vehicles backing onto the kerb and scraping rear bumpers.

The budget for the 50 (approx) wheel buffers comes from a $200,000 grant obtained by Council for the beautification of the Merriwa CBD.

The MDPA has also requested:
· uplighting of trees in Bettington Street
· engraving images into the footpaths in Bettington Street and
· illuminating the pedestrian crossing over Vennacher Street (between the Royal Hotel and the Regional Australia Bank).

We expect to see some of these initiatives starting soon.

If you have ideas for the ongoing social, economic, environmental, cultural or educational development of Merriwa, if you’d like to join the MDPA, we’d love to hear from you (merriwaprogress@gmail.com or go to www.mdpa.org.au).
