Merriwa is one of those towns that gets under your skin. It’s the kind of place where strangers get a wave, the pub knows your order, and the community rallies hard when someone needs a hand. Situated in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Merriwa sits along the Golden Highway between Singleton and Coolah – a small town with a big personality and a proud history that stretches back through generations.
Merriwa was gazetted as a town in 1851, though the surrounding district had been settled by Europeans for decades before that. The area sits on the traditional country of the Wanaruah people, and the land itself tells a story of pastoral heritage, colonial history, and the generations of farming families who built what the town is today.
The town grew off the back of the wool and cattle industries, and that agricultural identity remains central to Merriwa’s character. The Festival of the Fleeces – held annually and drawing visitors from across the state – is a direct celebration of that wool heritage. The Merriwa Colonial Museum and Bottle Museum are home to some remarkable local artefacts, and the town’s historic buildings along Bettington Street are a reminder of the craftsmanship and ambition of its early settlers.
For those who enjoy history, heritage walking trails and the tourist welcoming centre are a great place to start. Local volunteers have put serious time into preserving and sharing the story of this district, and it shows.
Merriwa might be a small town, but it doesn’t live small. The community supports an impressive range of clubs, organisations, schools, churches, and sporting groups – all run largely by volunteers who give their time because they genuinely care about the place they call home.
From junior rugby league and netball through to Rotary, the CWA, Little Athletics, and the Men’s Shed, there’s something going on most weekends. The community notice board on this portal exists partly because so much is always happening – and because Facebook posts disappear while notice boards don’t.
The local schools – Merriwa Central School and St Joseph’s Primary – are central to community life, and the town supports them with real enthusiasm. Events like the Merriwa Springtime Show, Christmas on Bettington, and Australia Day celebrations bring the whole community together in ways that are harder to find in larger towns.
Merriwa is located in the Upper Hunter Shire, approximately 250 kilometres north-west of Sydney. It sits along the Golden Highway, making it accessible by road from both the Hunter Valley and the central-western regions of NSW.
The surrounding district takes in the villages of Cassilis, Sandy Hollow, and Merriwa itself, with the Upper Hunter Shire Council based in Merriwa. The town is serviced by regular transport connections, a local medical practice, pharmacy, schools, and a solid range of retail and hospitality businesses.
