 Upper Hunter Shire Council

Upper Hunter Shire Council is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Australia Day Awards, celebrating outstanding community contributions and achievements.

Upper Hunter Shire

Citizen of the year

Jim Callinan, with his 41 years dedicated to broadcasting, has not only been a familiar voice but also a staunch supporter of local charities and a promoter of Scone’s rich identity. His involvement in various events and his unwavering support for causes like the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service exemplify the kind of community spirit that makes the Upper Hunter Shire a remarkable place to live.

Young Citizen of the Year (Under 25)

Charlie Milton, a young leader who has shone both on the sports field and within the school community, has brought pride to Scone High School. Her achievements in rugby and her subsequent recognition at sports academies speak volumes of her dedication and talent. Merriwa Swimming Club

COME AN TRY AFTERNOON

‘Come and Try’ Swim Club afternoon – February 2, 4-5pm.

We are hoping to get Merriwa Swimming Club up and running again.

At this stage for Term 1, we would like to run some squad training on Friday afternoons from 4pm. Children would be placed in groups according to their ability and train for between 20-45 minutes depending on their age and ability.

THIS IS NOT LEARN TO SWIM and teachers will not be in the water with children. Swimming Club is all about building on what students have learnt in Learn to Swim Lessons and will be focused on fitness and stroke correction.

Children must be confident in the water. They need to be able to dive/jump in at the deep end and swim at least 25m in a recognizable stroke.

We are having a ‘Come and Try’ afternoon between 4-5pm on Friday February 2. We will look at what children are able to do in the water and place them into a group accordingly. Swimming Club will take place on a Friday afternoon during Term 1, for approximately 6 weeks.

As a club, we are required to follow the pools guidelines, as well as updated Child Safety Rules. All children who participate must have a responsible adult to supervise them when involved in Swimming Club lessons. We appreciate your understanding and support.

For term 1, membership will be set as a ‘Come and Try’ membership. This means 60 days of free membership for this term, so the only cost will be entry into the pool. Details on how to sign up for membership will be posted soon.

If you have a child that would like to attend carnivals this term, please let us know as they will need to have a different type of membership.

We are a new committee and look forward to building up the Swimming Club again. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Please let us know if you are planning to attend on February 2 so we can get an idea of numbers. If you are unable to but have a child interested, please indicate that as well.

Spread the word-we hope to see as many children as possible in the water!
